More Indoor Fitness Activities

Feb. 2, 2022

Less traditional Indoor Fitness Activities:

Corporate apartment rentals that serve as “hubs” for our day services are one way that Ability Matters has found to ensure all the individuals we serve have access to workout facilities.  These meet the need for a “hub” where groups can meet and rearrange staffing and groups of individuals.  This is the most cost-effective way of creating a meeting place for “day services without walls” who do not need a facility.  In addition to creating a meeting “hub”, corporate rentals offer a way to give the individuals we serve access to amenities including indoor pools, hot tubs, saunas, yoga studios and fitness equipment in addition to their outdoor amenities.  Furthermore, some of the individuals we serve live in apartment complexes with their own amenities.  Apartment complex amenities are a great source of indoor fitness activities.

Columbus also offers a few adaptive gyms that cater to individuals with unique challenges to fitness.  The most popular adaptive gym amongst those we serve is UFIT, a fitness center dedicated to helping individuals with special neurological, developmental, or physical needs experience optimal levels of health and fitness.  This adaptive gym is able to offer specialized personal trainer services to people with disabilities.

Don’t forget the value of walking.  Indoor museums and shopping malls often offer a good place to get those steps in.  The following indoor museums participate in the Columbus Metropolitan Library Culture Pass Program.  Free admission tickets can be checked out at certain CML library branches.   For details go to https://cml.bibliocommons.com/v2/search?query=culture+pass  or columbuslibrary.org and search for “culture pass”:

Columbus Museum of Art

Ohio History Center

Wexner Center for the Arts

National Veterans Memorial and Museum

Franklin Park Conservatory

COSI is another great place to get in some healthy walking.  They do not participate in the library program, but an annual Family Access Membership with a Medicaid Card is only $51.25/year.  https://cosi.org/membership/membership-faqs/item/what-forms-of-id-are-accepted-to-qualify-for-family-access-memberships

Polaris Fashion Place and The Mall at Tuttle Crossing offer indoor shopping where it is easy to clock miles of walking activity.
